3. BACKGROUND and SIGNIFICANCE

3.1 Studies on paleontology from Asian are dramatically active, with important achievements coming out in large numbers. China has played a leading role on this scientific discipline in Asian.

3.2 At present, the construction of international and regional paleontological organizations needs to be strengthened. The International Palaeontological Association (IPA) is a global palaeontological organization, while regional subdisciplinary organizations exist at the same time, e.g. the Palaeontological Association (PALASS) based in UK, and North American Paleontological Convention (NAPC). However, the Asia-Pacific region currently lacks a similar international academic organization platform.

3.3 Discipline Development and Communication---Asian needs an active palaeontological organization, to provide a platform. This platform could help to boost the study of palaeontology, to enhance the academic exchange, to promote the Belt and Road, to improve talent cultivation, and to broaden the popular science exchange (exhibition). Meanwhile, the UNESCO-approved IGCP project involves many Asian countries that require more close relationship in the Asia-Pacific region.

3.4 Chinese government encourages innovation that calls for an innovative country, aiming to strengthen its words around the world and to get dominated in the Asia-Pacific region. The famous scientific research institutions and scientific research in China produce numerous achievements; among which the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, one of the three famous paleontological research centers of the world, the founding place of the Chinese palaeontological conference, and the host of the State Key Laboratory of Palaeobiology and Stratigraphy, deserves to lead the establishment of a Asia-Pacific region scientific organization.

3.5 The China Association for Science and Technology encourages the establishment of the headquarters of international science and technology organizations in China, and will provide necessary support subsequently.

3.6 Nanjing is carrying out the construction of an innovative city, which welcomes the headquarters of the international science and technology organization to settle in Nanjing.

4. THE AIM

The aim of APA is to promote international co-operation in the study of palaeontology in Asia and surrounding regions. This includes the encouragement of the research and collaboration of regional groups of palaeotologists, and of groups of specialists within the broader field of palaeontology.
